How the Megaways Mechanic Works

Megaways is a licensed reel modifier invented by Big Time Gaming. On every spin, each reel independently shows a random number of symbols, typically between 2 and 7. Because the ways count is the product of symbol counts per reel, the total changes spin by spin, with the familiar six-reel format peaking at 117,649 ways.

Wins follow standard Ways to Win logic: matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left, any row position. Many Megaways games add a horizontal tracker reel above the grid that contributes extra symbols to the middle reels, pushing the maximum ways count higher.

The license has been taken up by many studios, so Megaways titles vary widely in volatility and bonus design. The mechanic is very often paired with Tumble & Cascading Reels, where winning symbols are removed and replaced, and with Increasing Multipliers during Free Spins.
