How Paylines Work

Paylines are the oldest win system in slots: a set of predetermined patterns drawn across the reel grid. A win requires enough matching symbols to land on one of these lines, in most games starting from the leftmost reel. The number of lines is fixed by the game, from a single center line in classic three-reel titles to 50 or more in modern video slots.

Each payline is evaluated separately, so one spin can pay on several lines at once. Some games let players choose how many lines to activate, although most modern releases keep all lines permanently active and adjust the bet per line instead. The paytable lists symbol values per line and the exact line shapes.

Payline games frequently carry Wild Symbols to complete line combinations, Free Spins rounds, and occasionally Both Ways Pays, which evaluates the same lines from right to left as well.

The key distinction is against Ways to Win: ways systems count any combination of matching symbols on adjacent reels regardless of vertical position, while a payline win must follow the exact predefined pattern. Grid systems such as Cluster Pays drop lines entirely and evaluate groups of touching symbols instead.
