Both Ways Pays takes an ordinary win system and runs it in two directions. Combinations are checked starting from the leftmost reel, as usual, and additionally from the rightmost reel moving left. A three-symbol chain that ends on the last reel, which would miss in a standard game, pays here.

The mechanic sits on top of either Paylines or Ways to Win rather than replacing them. Middle-reel symbols become disproportionately valuable, because a symbol on reel three can participate in chains from both directions at once. Games balance this with adjusted paytables, so two-directional play does not simply double the return.

Both Ways Pays titles typically keep the rest of the feature set conventional: Wild Symbols, Scatter Symbols and Free Spins behave the same way they would in a one-directional game.

Do not confuse the mechanic with Adjacent Pays: Both Ways Pays still anchors chains to the outer reels, just on both sides, while Adjacent Pays lets a chain start on any reel in the middle of the grid.
