How Adjacent Pays Works

Adjacent Pays is a win system built on reel neighbourhood: matching symbols pay when they land on reels that sit next to each other. In its most common form the chain can start on any reel, not only the leftmost one, which separates it from standard left-to-right evaluation.

The rule set otherwise resembles ways-based play. Symbols do not need to follow a line pattern, and any row position on a qualifying reel counts. The paytable defines the minimum chain length, usually three adjacent reels, and longer chains pay more.

Games using Adjacent Pays often lean on symbol-heavy features: Wild Symbols to bridge gaps between reels, Stacked Wilds to fill whole reels, and Free Spins rounds where the chains become easier to complete.

The distinction to keep in mind: Ways to Win almost always anchors combinations to the leftmost reel, while Adjacent Pays cares only about the reels touching each other. It is also not Pay Anywhere, where adjacency does not matter at all, and not Cluster Pays, which requires symbols to touch within the grid in both directions.
